Environmental annual report

RIVM is located on the Antonie van Leeuwenhoek site in Bilthoven, which location is shared with a number of other organizations. A  joint environmental permit, which also covered such aspects as the discharge of wastewater and the collection of wastes, was issued for the site as a whole. As a result, the environmental annual report for 2012 concerns all organizations located on the Antonie van Leeuwenhoek site.

RIVM was granted a combined permit under the terms of the Dutch Environmental  Act in 2008, which is still valid. A Company Environmental Plan covering the period from 2011 to 2014 was also drawn up. This plan includes a number of improvements, such as the installation of new oil storage tanks and the phasing out of coolants that are harmful for the environment.

The main data relating to the environmental aspects for 2012 are as follows:

• The water consumption rose by about 4% compared with 2011, to 132,400 m3. One of the reasons for this increase is the rise in water consumption for sterilization and vaccine production.
• The number of pollution units discharged in the wastewater fell from 651 in 2011 to 569, as a result of a drop in the discharge of organic substances.
• The total amount of wastes produced fell by about 12% compared with 2011, to about 770 tonnes. These wastes include waste paper, industrial wastes, garden wastes and laboratory wastes.
• The gas consumption rose by about 9% compared with 2011, to about 8.8 million m3 of natural gas, while the electricity consumption remained practically constant.
