Chief science officers

RIVM aims to deliver high-quality scientific information that meets the needs of our clients as closely as possible. This means that we have to be aware of what is going on in the scientific world and in society.

We also want to make optimum use of the expertise available within our organization. To this end, we appointed four Chief Science Officers (CSOs) in 2012. These CSOs – a new function at RIVM – play the role of ambassadors for the further development of innovative scientific research at RIVM. Two other CSOs will be appointed in 2013.

Research strategy

The CSOs are also closely involved in determining the course to be followed by RIVM. They advise management on the research to be performed, and are jointly responsible for the content of RIVM’s Strategic Research – that is, the self-funded activities that RIVM performs to anticipate future demands and developments. These activities include not only research but also for example advice on innovation and sustainability issues. We also make substantial investments in cooperation with partners in the international scientific world.
